Red sky. Looks strange, but lighting could be real.

It's real.

This is caused by the massive fires in Indonesia. Farmers use slash and burn, even though its illegal. Was in Singapore on the 14th - 16th and it was hazy and smelled of smoke. Had hazardous hair condition warnings as well.

In Bali now and there is no indication of fire or haze here or in Ubud up further north due to the wind blowing it away and towards Malaysia and Singapore.

Malaysia’s officials are not happy with Indonesia right now, who is saying that it is not their fires causing the issues in Malaysia.

It's related to the fact that the Sun sets in the West and rises in the East, and that most weather in the mid-latitudes (especially around Europe) where the traditional sailing routes are tends to move from West to East.

In order to get a red sky, two things need to happen. There need to be water-laden clouds (which appear red when lit from their underside), and there needs to be clear skies over the horizon so the sun can light the underside of the clouds closer to you.

If there is a red sky at night, that means there are clear skies to the West, so the approaching weather will be clear.

If there is a red sky in the morning, that means there are clear skies to the East, but the sky closer to you is filled with clouds. And since the high pressure system (the clear skies to the East) has already passed, it's likely those clouds are going to be followed by more clouds from the West.

Is there any truth in the old saying, "Red sky at night, shepherds delight; Red sky in morning, shepherds warning"?

Main Post:

Any time I see a red sky this little rhyme always goes off in my head and I'm just wondering if there is anything scientific that puts any truth into those words?

Top Comment: i've heard this same expression with "sailors'" substituted for "shepherds". anyhow, yes this is a valid saying, at least on the East Coast of the US where I grew up. if there were clouds in the morning eastern skies making the sunrise turn red - and the wind was coming from that direction - you'd know weather might be coming. at night, if there's no weather on the western horizon (and the weather usually comes from the west), you know you're going to have a relatively quiet watch (which all mid-watch standers appreciate). TL;DR red in morning = weather moving in= warning to get ready and red at night = no weather = awwraht awwraht awwraht Edit: corrections to the direction of the weather. As others have pointed out below, it's west to east.

"Red sky at night; sailor's delight. Red sky at morning; sailors take warning." Accurate? Why?

Main Post:

A red sunset is supposed to mean that the weather will be nice the following day. A red sunrise is supposed to indicate rain is coming. How accurate is this and why? Does the color actually matter? What if the sunrise is orange?

Top Comment:

A red sky indicates that the atmosphere has a lot of dust particles in it. Short wavelength light (blue, violet) scatters away, leaving the red light to penetrate. The redder the color the dustier the sky. At sunrise and sunset the light is traveling through the lower atmosphere and is giving an indication of the dust levels in the lower atmosphere.

The proverb then reflects a correlation between a dusty sky and calm weather. This correlation exists because dusty skies are caused by high pressure regions that push dust into the lower atmosphere. These dust particles scatter the blue light away and leave a red sky. So a deep red sunset indicates dusty skies and good weather either to the west (sunset) or to the east (sunrise).

Over most parts of the globe, winds move west to east so a red sky to the west indicates that calm weather is on the way. A red sky to the east indicates that calm weather has just passed by, and it's possible that a stormy low pressure region may be following.
